Postpartum Self-Care Assessment

It can feel like a constant battle between taking care of our newborns and taking care of ourselves, so in addition to caring for our baby’s needs use this list as a reminder to honor your own needs. Prioritize a number of tasks you would like to do each day or rank them for yourself in order of importance.

  • Take a hot shower or bath today or tonight.
  • Each day I will change my clothes and get into something clean. Maybe one day this week I will choose to put something cute that makes me feel great.
  • Eat at least one nourishing meal while sitting down at a table, not on the couch!
  • I will keep myself hydrated throughout the day and night.
  • Laugh at least once today. Either call a friend who can find humor in anything or watch a funny show or video.
  • At least once today, at a minimum of a few moments, I will ground myself with gratitude or through spirituality (meditation, prayer, yoga, deep breathing, journaling, reading or some centering exercise)
  • I will move my body today by taking a short walk around the block or up and down the stairs, doing 10 minutes of stretching or yoga, or dancing in the kitchen while heating up a bottle.
  • Connect with my partner about something other than the baby! Maybe send a nice text, give a hug or kiss, share a glass of wine or tea once everyone is asleep.
  • Do something for myself today that makes me feel special and ignites inner joy. Perhaps treat myself to a manicure when X watches the baby, buy a new chapstick or lip gloss, read a favorite book, buy myself flowers, or meet a friend for a walk or lunch?
  • Honor my body’s need for sleep by forgoing cleaning, laundry, emails and cooking (dinner will just have to be later or I will ask my partner to cook) if I can grab an extra hour of sleep when the baby is sleeping.
